Hello, I'm Momma Martha

Hello and nice to meet you! I am so pleased to introduce Momma Martha, LLC, specializing in “Telelactation” or virtual lactation help! I am finding that the process of starting this new business is not unlike a gestational period, or a journey, where there is much anticipation and excitement, yet a little bit of uncertainty about exactly how things are going to turn out.

My journey to this point in my career started decades ago during my days as a student nurse when I shadowed a CNM (certified nurse midwife) in my obstetrics clinical rotation. From that point on I was passionate about women’s health and teaching women about their bodies and how to take care of them. During my many years of practice as a CNM, I delivered over 1,000 babies, then encouraged and taught mothers to breastfeed their babies. In midwifery school, we were taught a limited amount about lactation and breastfeeding (since we had so much more to learn about the gestation and birth process!) Personally, I was able to exclusively breastfeed both my children and did so for about 3 years each, but I was one of the lucky moms who never had major issues or complications with breastfeeding. After my second child I took 6 years off from practice to be a stay-at-home mom… and build a house… and manage rental property… while my husband was at sea for 6 months of the year…

It was after that I received a phone call from a midwife colleague who was working as a hospital-based lactation consultant and looking for someone to join the lactation service. I was thrilled to be back at the bedside, assisting and teaching mothers during one of their most joyful yet sometimes stressful, exhausting, and often tearful times. The more I provided care to these new moms, the more I realized how much the assistance from a lactation consultant could help mothers to ease their anxiety by teaching what is normal and expected, and preparing them for possible complications or issues, knowing that education along with a strong support system was essential for success. This education gives confidence and empowers mothers to persevere through any potential obstacles. While in this position I worked hard to expand services to provide virtual follow-up when needed, realizing the many benefits of a remote visit from home with a newborn infant.

My goal with Momma Martha, LLC is to provide you with some of this support that is so important for success in reaching your breastfeeding goals.

The ACA (Affordable Care Act) has mandated that health insurance plans must provide breastfeeding support, counseling, and equipment for the duration of breastfeeding (yes, this means a breast pump), but many companies have not been 100% compliant. You can check on this website to see if your insurance will cover your visits, or I can issue a bill for you to submit to your insurance. I look forward to assisting you and your baby with reaching your breastfeeding goals!

Martha helped me long-distance with breastfeeding all three of my babies - from 2017 to 2021! I cannot imagine navigating all that comes with breastfeeding without her years of expertise and heart of gold. I first reached out for help when I had mastitis in 2017 and she has since helped me with the first latch to weaning and everything in between with my babies. I am so thankful to have her in our corner; breastfeeding is rarely easy & is such an emotional/physical experience. To hear her calm, reassuring, knowledgeable voice is absolutely crucial in trying times - even to this third time mama! I owe so much of our enjoyable, successful breastfeeding journeys to her and I am forever grateful.

Extremely confident in her ability to assist with breastfeeding and that confidence helped tremendously. Martha was so much more to our experience than just another doctor/nurse. She was very caring, kind and willing to spend the time to do things the right way, Very knowledgeable and we are grateful to have worked with her.

I can not say enough amazing things about Martha. As a first time mom, I tried my best to be as prepared for breastfeeding as possible, but didn't know where to begin. I was connected to Martha through a close friend who had used her services and raved about her. Martha is so easy to talk to and made me feel immediately comfortable the first time we talked. She provided me with so much fantastic information and resources that helped me feel as prepared as I could be. Once my sweet girl arrived, Martha made herself so available for questions and fears as I navigated painful breastfeeding and an eventual lip tie revision. She is worth her weight in gold! I highly recommend her and will use her again in the future!

Martha went above and beyond, taking time out of her busy day to make me feel comfortable learning about lactation and having everything I needed as a new mom. She took extra time to make sure all my questions were answered, and she is truly an asset to MUSC!

Martha helped me in April of 2020 with problems breastfeeding my new daughter. Martha was patient, helpful and very knowledgeable. So knowledgeable in fact that she was able to determine the likely cause of the problem and provide tips to help me with it after a phone conversation. I was feeling so lost and alone during this time of my life because let’s face it, having a baby during a pandemic wasn’t easy. Martha took the time to speak with me as long as I needed, and each time I left the conversation feeling confident and supported. I would have given up breastfeeding if it weren’t for Martha’s help and thanks to her, I went on nursing my daughter for 10 more months. I HIGHLY recommend her services.
